Harold's annual review & what happened in 2016
We are pleased to share our 2016 review with you!
In terms of sustainability, 2016 was an important and successful year for Harold's. Following the switch to nickel-free fittings and the complete transition to organic cotton in previous years, this year we were able to convert our main leathers from semi-vegetable to 100% vegetable-tanned. This means that for the first time, over 50% of our collection consists of purely vegetable-tanned leather. For our South American products, this figure is as high as 70%.
The transition to purely vegetable-tanned leather proved to be quite complex in collaboration with our partners. In addition to price and quality issues, the main challenge was to build trust in the process among the tanners. Another aspect was ensuring the long-term availability of organic tanning blends from sustainable sources.
We've taken a major step in the right direction in making our materials more eco-friendly—the systematic reduction and elimination of chromium in leather. However, this also means that more steps are still to come.
